Urban sprawl into Natura 2000 network over Europe

چکیده
Urban growth is a major threat to biodiversity conservation at the global scale. Its impacts are expected be especially detrimental when it sprawls into landscape and reaches sites of high value due species ecosystems they host, such as protected areas. I analyzed degree urbanization (i.e., urban cover rate) from 2006 2015 in Natura 2000 network, which, according Habitats Birds Directives, harbor habitats concern Europe. used data on land imperviousness COPERNICUS calculate compare covers rates inside outside 2000. also relationships with set characteristics sites. was 10 times lower than (0.4% vs. 4%) throughout European Union. However, were slightly higher (4.8% 3.9%), which indicates an incipient sprawl network. In general, affected most by those surrounded densely populated areas clusters) that had low number or concern, albeit some member states rate both large value. Connectivity of Natura 2000 forest sites in Europe
Background/Purpose: In the context of the European Biodiversity policy, the Green Infrastructure Strategy is one supporting tool to mitigate fragmentation, inter-alia to increase the spatial and functional connectivity between protected and unprotected areas. The Joint Research Centre has developed an integrated model to provide a macro-scale set of indices to evaluate the connectivity of the N...
متن کاملMultidimensional urban sprawl in Europe: A self-organizing map approach
The paper considers urban sprawl in Europe from a multidimensional and exploratory point of view. Several studies on the topic (mainly from urban economics, but also from other fields, such as urban planning or regional science) are reviewed in order to identify the key dimensions of the urban sprawl phenomenon in Europe. These comprise the following six elements: connectivity, decentralization...

The research objective of the project and article “European Ecological Network Natura 2000 – opportunities and threats” Natura 2000 sites constitute a form of environmental protection, several legal problems are likely to result. Most controversially, certain sites will be subject to two regimes of protection: as national parks and as Natura 2000 sites. This dualism of the legal regulation make...
